About this Artist
"I have a longing for Fred Astaire-like elegance in my life. Since I'm a poor dancer, I seek for my pieces to convey a sense of frozen dance."
John Shrader seeks to convey a feeling of grace and elegance in his work. He loves the richness of wood grain and delights in displaying it so others can also appreciate its beauty. He finds working in his shop to be a joyful experience, and he hopes that this joy is communicated to those who view his work.
Most of Shrader's bowls are made from expensive exotic woods, which are normally only available as flat boards. He has developed a process for making bowls from flat boards that results in very little waste material, so a bowl from even expensive wood is still affordable. In most cases, Shrader finishes these pieces in a high-gloss, buffed-out lacquer finish to display the wood to maximum advantage.
Shrader's training and career was in engineering and physics. He uses his technical background to develop processes to make his creations, but the technology is always in service to the aesthetics of the item being created. He has taken classes at Arrowmont Craft School, in addition to numerous one-day classes from some of the world's best turners.
It takes time to make great artwork. Most of the pieces we offer are created one at a time by the artist, and shipped directly to you from the artist’s studio.
