About this Artist

Jeff Hilber

"I love making furniture. It can be a nerve-wracking, belly laughing, humbling, existential experience. The designs allow you to see slightly different juxtapositions within the whole, whether in passing or contemplation. Simplicity can become complexity, or the reverse, over and over in the viewer's mind. Furniture means a great deal to us today because each piece of furniture is at once connected to every piece ever made."

While design takes into account the past and the future, fabrication is Jeff Hilber's connection to the present. Hilber captures the moment in his work. His creative process is carried by the demand to be autonomous and is fulfilled every day in the studio by the art produced there.

"The design process and fabrication are separated as much as possible. The design decisions made at the bench, in response to the wood, are supported and directed by the drawings. The work is approached as if each piece will be cherished and taken care of for 100 years or more. The woodworking techniques are borrowed from the best and most appropriate of each era, ancient to contemporary. Primarily vertical grain and quarter sawn wood is used. Veneers open up a large palette that can produce kaleidoscope and harlequin designs within classical arrangements. These arrangements can also be reshaped. Original design is not stressed, but appreciated when it appears. Echoes of familiar styles are welcome guests."
