Wood Console Table

Created by Jeffrey Hills
One of a Kind
Five AAAAA Musical grade quilted Maple, quarter sawn Walnut, Padauk and Ebony. This is a beautiful piece of wood that seemingly floats over its arched base. The legs are hand planed with a compound Dado joint. The 7/8th inch Quilted Maple top was planed down on the edges to give it more lightness. The legs were designed as a Walnut-Padauk-Walnut fusion, in order to work as a continuous transition to the Padauk arches, which are the key design element. The cross members are connected to the main arches with Ebony square hand carved faceted plugs.

The beauty of the piece lies in its simple elegance, it is five pieces of wood connected to the legs with a sense of seeming effortlessness. Paradoxically, the piece is quite complicated and unique in its construction in that there are no right angles with which to reference true square or true plumb. The two basic techniques used by the artist to achieve this is to establish true square on a separate board to which he uses as a gluing matrix and through the extensive use of a carpenters level to achieve a plumb line and a flat plane for the top. The basic construction techniques include compressed dowels to attach the top to the base, through dado joints to connect the arch to the legs and mortise and tenon to connect the front legs to the back legs. This table was finished in five coats of hand rubbed Tung Oil.

Care instructions:
A high quality furniture oil with UV protection is recommended for the base and top periodically.

About this Artist

Jeffrey Hills

"When I build tables, I often think of the people who will sit around them and fill the room with joy and laughter. From my windows of consciousness, to my energy and passion to build in balance with nature's gift something of utility, to creating an object of lasting beauty, that is my gift and my joy. "

Jeffrey Hills will often be inspired for a project by a beautiful piece of wood. First he sees the wood and then seeks to bring out the life that the wood holds and represents. His goal is to give the wood a future as a well-crafted and engineered piece of furniture.

In all of his work, Hills uses precise joinery, clean lines, and attention to species selection and grain management. All joinery is done by hand and tool. Finishes are hand rubbed oils, varnishes, and wax.

Hills is primarily a self-taught woodworker and furniture designer, with 50 years of experience. He has studied with Robert Meadow of The Lutherie the art and techniques of Japanese woodworking. All of Hills' hand tools are Japanese in design and made by master forgers. Jeffrey Hills has been designated as a Taos "Living Master."
