"Cherry Jewel Chest"

Wood Jewelry Chest

Created by Andrew Pitts
This is a lovely jewelry chest! Made from local Chesapeake Bay trees that had fallen in storms or were dying and given new life, it is practical as well as beautiful. Formed with a curved, bent laminated cherry front and back, it has sufficient height so necklaces may be hung from brass pegs inside the solid-brass hinged door, and the amply sized drawers of cherry fronts with curved holly sides and velvet lined red cedar bottoms pivot on a steel rod so they will not fall out while selecting fine jewelry. The lid flips up to provide easy access to the necklaces and the top compartment. The fine solid brass drawer and door pulls provide a firm but delicate feel.

Every part of this chest exudes the highest level of craftsmanship and quality. Even the drawers have been skillfully hand dovetailed on the curved side pieces, a rare and difficult process. The fine shellac polish finish is a joy to touch. On the bottom, it carries the burned in stamp of the maker, plus the sequential number of the piece and the year it was made.

This piece should need only dusting and an occasional coat of wax on the shellaced surfaces. Sunlight will gently darken the cherry to a golden brown. As with any fine furniture piece, avoid contact with liquids.

About this Artist

Andrew Pitts

"In my furniture I strive for graceful functionality while maintaining the integrity of fine craftsmanship. The result of my work is not simply a piece of furniture, but the physical embodiment of a very personal experience."

Furniture artist Andrew Pitts feels a deep passion for wood as a material and assumes a personal responsibility to craft it into furniture respectful of the finest sensibilities. An observer wrote, "One can recognize an Andrew Pitts design by the grace of its curves, exquisitely matched grain patterns, exacting joinery, and meticulous finishing."

A committed steward of the environment, he uses pre-fallen or dying trees, harvesting, milling and drying them himself. His design approach is to celebrate the wood's inherent beauty, respecting its colors, imperfections and variations. Pitts uses sweeping curves in much of his work, bent laminating hardwoods to make graceful legs and panels, carving designs into the work whenever he can.

Andrew Pitts is mostly self-taught with 35 years experience. His prior career in the navy as a nuclear engineer prepared him, as the discipline to command warships and operate nuclear reactors translated into an astute attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. He has had opportunities to take workshops with masters such as wood carver Chris Pye and furniture designer/maker Michael Fortune.
