About this Artist

Christine Kaiser

"I want my pieces to have multiple meanings and interpretations -the world is complicated and we are complicated in the world. "

In her work, Christine Kaiser creates fairy tales for the modern world and, like most folktales, the meaning isn't revealed at first glance. Inspired by dreams, animation stills, and cartoons, Kaiser roots the pieces in the world by using a classical visual esthetic.

To create each piece, wood planks are cut on a band saw, shaped on a sander, and carved with rotary and hand tools. Most of the small additional parts are not only glued, but also pegged in place and the artist hand-sands each piece to a porcelain-like finish. The pieces are painted with multiple layers of acrylic paint, often include pencil drawing, and are finished with a matte varnish.

Kaiser attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and received her BFA from Tufts University. For many years, the artist worked at a Boston Gallery repairing painted and metal sculpture. The work was very exacting and required almost obsessive attention to detail. Kaiser believes that position was where she learned many of the skills that are used in her current work.

EYE CATCHING
My "dog" is attached to the arch by the front door. Everyone stops to look at it. It is attached to the wall. I'm thinking of putting it back on my cocktail table b/c everyone wants to hold it. They are pulling it off of the wall!! It is easy to attach to wall. The dog has a little hole for a nail/ screw.
