Carved and painted wooden raven with steel legs on a found and modified wooden mannequin hand. The base is a vintage bowling pin with the top cut off and then turned upside down, the hand is mounted to this base with a 5/16" diameter steel rod.

The concept behind this piece is a play on the Leonardo Da Vinci Flying Machines. Orr imagined a very intelligent raven wishing for an opposable thumb device much as Da Vinci wished to be able to fly!

"Taking my inspiration from traditional Native American cultures, I see my raven-crows as messengers who are able to travel and communicate freely between the physical and spritual realms."

Mark Orr is a lifelong artist and wood carver as well as a collector of vintage artifacts. Drawing inspiration from cultural history, Orr carves raven-crows to represent their historic role as messengers between realities and the couriers of change. Combining his carved raven-crows and the symbolic objects that humans seem compelled to collect, Mark Orr unites the message and the messenger.
