Loy Allen
"My inspiration comes from the natural world, the hills and plains of Dakota."
Loy Allen is a South Dakota native who returned to the Black Hills after studying design at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After learning basic lampworking in South Dakota, Allen studied advanced glass techniques at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and at The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.
Inspired by the Art Nouveau Age and the plant and animal life around her South Dakota studio, Allen uses lampworking techniques to depict the natural forms of South Dakota. Intending the beautiful glass sculptures of grasshoppers, dragonflies, and orchids to be expressive without being strictly realistic, Allen celebrates the mystery and power of nature.
Loy Allen has been self-employed as a flameworker since 1979.
