"I strive to create a unique, wearable, and beautifully constructed garment with timeless design, historical references, and impeccable craftsmanship."
With a background in textile and apparel design, illustration, and costume history, K. Riley draws from the past to create contemporary design. Paying equal attention to silhouettes and surface design, Riley translates shapes and details from historical costume studies, adding a contemporary twist.
Riley's botanical and insect inspired collection is linoleum block printed. She designs, illustrates, and painstakingly hand-carves each linoleum block, carving up to five blocks for an individual garment printing. Each garment section is printed before construction. The artist layers prints and colors to get the desired effect, carefully considering all of the garment details before printing.
After receiving a textile degree from Moore College of Art, Kay Riley went on to explore her interests in fashion and fabrics by developing a line of hand-painted silk clothing. Her work has been featured in Ornament magazine and shown in galleries and boutiques. For over 25 years, Riley has worked to create clothing with quiet beauty and elegance.
