Kristi Sloniger

Moonstar Pottery

"I have found a new world of expression and creativity in my tile wall hangings."

For ceramic artist Kristi Sloniger, each day in the studio is an exploration as she delves into the techniques of mocha diffusion. The terms mocha diffusion and mocha-ware originated because of the resemblance of the finished work to the Arabian quartz, mocha stone.

Sloniger uses slips and colorants on her hand-built tiles while the clay is still wet in order to create organic one- of-a-kind works. All of these designs are absorbed into the clay and are then fired to vitrification in her gas kiln. There are no glazes used in her work.

Sloniger has been working in clay for over 20 years. As a self-taught potter, she has learned her craft through diligent study, many hours in the studio, and the invaluable help of several talented studio potters willing to share their expertise
