Suellen Fowler makes blown glass objects & solid sculptures using borosilicate glass. The glass is formed & blown free hand, heated & worked at over 2200 degrees F using a bench-mounted torch.
Fowler makes her own colored glass using formulae she developed. Each color is made by introducing oxides into a piece of tubing, that is collapsed & hand mixed over the torch. The colored glass is pulled into a long thin cane & cut into shorter lengths.
An ornament is made using a clear glass tube as the blowpipe. Layers of small diameter clear rod are coiled around the end, fused, and blown into a bubble. Colored glass cane is applied to the surface to create the different patterns. When the ornament is finished it is annealed in a kiln. When it has cooled, a loop is formed on the top.
