Wedell constructs her paintings with multiple layers of transparent and opaque color, juxtaposing light and dark passages that flow and interact with each other. Inspired by nature, the places and spaces she paints are intentionally non-specific and are sometimes abstracted entirely. Wedell aims to capture the essence of fleeting moments and offer the viewer the space to rest, dream, and remember.
Wedell creates textured surfaces with many layers of cold wax, powdered pigment, and oil stick. She alternates between adding paint, drawing or scribbling lines, and scraping them away with palette knives and carving tools to excavate the layers below. As she works on a piece, she knows that the composition is constantly in play, and she builds and removes layers until a luminous atmosphere emerges.
Andrea Wedell has a bachelor of arts from UCLA. She also studied under acclaimed beaux art teachers Michele Massiou and Jacqueline Guillermain for over 10 years while living in France. She worked with abstract artist and educator Marianne Mitchell for two years to further develop her multi-layering technique.
