Ann Thompson

"I try not to interfere with the stone's essence when I work with it. Rather than matching any organic quality, I try to complement its form with a fabricated one."

Ann Thompson strives to combine stones formed by the rhythmic and eternal waves of the ocean with her own meticulously crafted metalwork in an effort to seamlessly unite the past and present in a work of utilitarian design. She joins the manufactured and the natural by direct fabrication in order to remain deeply connected to both material and process.

Long intrigued by the variant shapes, colors and textures of stones near her coastal Maine home, Thompson has sought out and discovered a means of transforming these scavenged objects into useful and timeless tools to be handled and admired.
