Barbara Poole

B. Felt

"I use traditional felt making techniques and a sense of playfulness to create unique pieces of wearable art that bring joy to the people who wear them. I create with the quote "life is too short to wear boring clothes!"

Felt artist Barbara Poole was drawn to the medium because of the history and almost magic change from fluffs of wool to solid fabric. She was entranced by the fact that the combination of primitive products, wool, and soap, with physical work, rolling and massaging, could create such beautiful items. From her background as a painter, she brings a sense of color and style that is her own.

Barbara works almost completely in the laminate technique of felting, commonly known as Nuno, meaning that she uses luscious silks as the base of felt work. This base gives even her winter weight work a lightness that would not be possible with only felt. Barbara does all her own dye work incorporating traditional Japanese Shibori techniques.

Barbara has an MFA in painting which allows her to work confidently with color, pattern, line and light and switched full time to textiles about 10 years ago. As a textile artist Barbara is largely a self-taught. Originally her textile work was made as a way to unblock her creativity ffrom painting, but as she learned more about the felting technique she fell in love with the process.
