Barbara McKinder

" When I was introduced to recycled materials, I became overjoyed with the opportunity to make jewelry out of mechanical outcasts. Many of my pieces have a simplicity of line and form which allows for an elegant beauty. My work is light, comfortable and easy to wear. "

Influenced by the modernist movement, Barbara McKinder's work reflects a simplicity of line using recycled materials combined with new materials. She feels that creating balance in a piece is both exciting and challenging. Her studio can go from a place of order to complete chaos when she begins to work on a new design. Not every attempt is a success, but when it happens, it is pure joy.

Scouring junk yards is McKinder's new passion. After a shopping spree, she goes home and spreads out almost everything she can get her hands on and begins to play. When a piece comes together, it is pure joy and magic.

After giving up her professional gardening career, Barbara McKinder began her professional metalsmithing training at Monterey Peninsula College. Her training as an artist has been largely self-taught and extremely rewarding.
