Beth Novak Enamels

"Creating is part of who I am. I can't imagine life without it. I believe in great craftsmanship, and I am excited by interesting textures, rich colors and soothing forms."

Artist Beth Novak's work is often described as "industrial" and "organic" in the same sentence. She is constantly taking in inspiration from the things around her: natural forms, like river stones and nests, and structural, architectural details, like rivets in the cross-beams of a bridge.

Novak uses the age-old process of enameling to add durable color to her formed copper pieces. She then fabricates intricate sterling silver settings to hold them, incorporating cold connections to hold the enamel in place. This process takes considerable planning and creative problem solving to execute.

Novak graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, WI with a degree in Studio Art, concentrating in Art Metals and Life Drawing. She learned enamels at the Peninsula Art School under Jan Forkert. She has also taken workshops from J. Fred Woell, classes at Revere Academy, and a workshop with Andy Cooperman at Peninsula Art School.
