Carey Smith

"The workability, color, and strength of metals and other materials intrigue me. The rich palette of patinated copper and the subtle strength of a pebble suggest the spiritual qualities of nature, and can transform the ordinary to the sublime. I strive for precision, integrity, and beauty so that my work may bring joy to those who see and hold it."

Carey Smith brings a contemporary vibe to the variety of metals and materials he uses in his finely crafted pieces meant for a lifetime of enjoyment. Little handmade spoons add an elegant, artistic touch to any table setting, and over the years, they will evoke memories of conversations, special occasions, and celebrations for the owner.

Carey Smith skillfully creates one-of-a-kind pieces that employ a variety of precious and non-precious metals and materials. He typically uses casting, forging, and fabrication techniques, while his finished pieces often include multiple processes and materials.

Carey Smith received a master of fine arts degree in metalsmithing in 1974, and went on to teach it for over 30 years. Today, he is retired and works from his home studio in Portland, OR. His work has been displayed and sold internationally.
