"All of my work originates on the lathe and is then altered by carving, burning, dyeing and, most of all, by attitude and whimsy. I get a big kick out of objects that can be used once. "

Artist Clifford Lounsbury enjoys creating work that challenges perceptions about material usage. The shapes of his pieces are not those typically associated with work from the lathe, or even with the material of wood.

Using chain saws, lathes and various carving and burning tools, Lounsbury transforms solid pieces of wood into hollowed forms. Many of his techniques were invented by the artist, and most of his work is finished with oil or lacquers, then hand rubbed with wax.

Along with his university training, Lounsbury credits various master carvers and turners for sharing both techniques and insight.
