David Skinner

"Painting in the landscape tradition, though not traditional in my approach, my work explores the expressive possibilities of paint through investigations of color, texture, light, and atmosphere. I draw inspiration from nature and use my paintings as a way to creatively interpret the spiritual connection I feel in the great outdoors."

Working out of a studio in an old grain warehouse in Asheville, NC, David Skinner has created a body of work that celebrates the natural beauty of the area. Through his landscape paintings, Skinner explores a bold palette and expressive brushwork to create his unique interpretations of nature.

Though trained in oil painting at art school, for the last ten years Skinner has been using acrylic paint on both paper and canvas to realize his landscape paintings. His work varies in size from large canvases to small paper pieces, and he works from photographs he's taken while hiking and camping in the Smoky Mountains.

Skinner entered college as a ceramics major at the University of California at Santa Barbara, but soon found a home in the painting department. He was mentored by such great painters as Karen Carson, Oliver Jackson, and Irma Cavat. Upon graduating in 1986, Skinner was presented with the William Dole award for excellence in painting.
