In his work, Ian Whitt focuses on creating implied motion that stems from the aqueous nature of working with hot glass. Each piece he makes is inspired by the inherent properties and characteristics of both hot glass and water.
Using traditional and modern glass techniques, Whitt creates his work through a series of planned steps to achieve the desired results. In both his sculptural and functional work, he creates implied motion by adding long bits of hot glass to each piece, thus giving his work a flowing, linear quality that makes it seem to be frozen in motion.
Ian first studied glassblowing for a year and a half in the awe-inspiring heat of the glass studios in New Orleans, LA. He then received a bachelor of fine arts in glass from the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, TN. He has worked for numerous glass artists and production glass studios all over the United States, including Niche Modern, Martha's Vineyard Glassworks, and CB Glassworks.
