Jamie Lee Hoffer

"When I am immersed in the process and lost in the moment—that magical place that exists universally outside ourselves that all creative people tap into—I am in my truest place. My work is an exploration of that connection between me, that place, and all else. A cartography of the dimensional journey. The truer to myself I become, the easier it becomes to connect."

Jamie Lee Hoffer was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey. As a child, she took painting lessons with her mother's talented Hungarian friend, Magda, a beautiful eccentric artist and terrific cook. To this day, garlic and turpentine remain two of Jamie Lee's favorite scents. Most of her inspiration comes from the energy of the outdoors, the gathered objects she finds, and the calmness of sitting quietly.

The encaustic medium found Jamie Lee after a long, experimental journey with other media. It has all the elements that inspire her and push her boundaries. The wax leads and she follows. It is a love affair full of mystery, excitement, and patience.

Jamie Lee Hoffer received her BFA in 1980 from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, majoring in printmaking and art history. In 1982, she moved to San Francisco, where she started working as a graphic designer. She then relocated to Los Angeles in 1991. She continues to do graphic design in addition to teaching art to children ages 6-16 and running encaustic painting workshops for adults.
