Jesse Shaw

"My focus is to create unique furniture that emphasizes natural flowing forms, contemporary designs, and traditional techniques."

Jesse Shaw builds one-of-a-kind handmade furniture. In his spare time, he is an instructor at the Eliot School, a craft and fine arts school in Boston, Mass., and at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education in Harvard Square.

Jesse Shaw uses the steam-bending process and other traditional woodworking techniques to create lamps, chairs, and tables. Steam bending involves heating and softening the lignin inside the wood, which then allows the cellulose to slide past itself, creating a curved form. When the wood cools, the lignin hardens, retaining the curved shape.

Jesse Shaw trained at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. In his second year, he earned the title of Fellow Resident, and was able to hone his skills under the guidance of master furniture makers. He went onto obtain his MFA in furniture design at the Savannah College of Art & Design. Upon graduation, he became the lead furniture designer for the design firm Currey & Company.
