John Bradford

"I find myself drawn to a simplicity where balance is found in minimal forms and space becomes a presence. My art is encouraged by a quote from Basho: " Do not seek to emulate the old masters. Seek what they sought."

Combining inspiration from the patterns found in nature, admiration for the sculpture of architecture, and a personal affinity for traditional Japanese aesthetics, J. Bradford sometimes chooses the basic form of an Asian scroll as a starting point for his low-relief wall hangings.

Working with fiberboard in simple layered shapes, Brad manipulates paints and dyes in such a way that metal patinas or ceramic glazes are suggested to some. Light carving, wood burning and metal leaf create counterpoint, while handmade papers and wood veneers left in their raw, naturally warped state bring depth and subtle detail. Shape, color, and texture draw the eye and hold the attention without dictating to or overwhelming the senses.

Having spent many years working as a finish carpenter, Brad is pleased to be building his own designs. While most of his previous work was functional, he has shifted his focus and now beauty alone is the intended function. Experimenting with common materials and old skills, J. Bradford is finding new forms of expression for both. While thankful for many influences, his artwork is self-taught.
