John E Metcalfe
Metcalfe's focus is to depict light in new and unique ways. With each painting, he explores the fundamental elements of light and how the viewer actually sees and interprets color. Metcalfe seeks to mix unconventional color combinations and techniques to provide just enough information to form that image, often reducing the subject to the elements necessary to depict light and infuse motion.
Metcalfe first bends his palette knife in two places, creating a unique multi-surface tool. Next, he covers the white of the primed canvas and develops a textural basis for the following stages of the image. He then layers color after color, using the under-texture of the previous layers to catch smaller and smaller specks of paint until the canvas is complete.
Metcalfe is a self-taught autodidact and has been pointed in the right direction from time to time by other artists and their critiques. It wasn't until Metcalfe received a best of show award for a one-of-a-kind painting that it became apparent he had developed something original enough to pursue as an artist. He then further developed that process, which led to his current eye-popping canvases of joy and color.
