Jon Taner

"To begin each painting with an open mind is my greatest achievement. Being informed by what I have learned and by a desire to continue painting what is real, a dream, an abstraction, or a combination of these things is an exciting goal. I am proud to say that over the course of my life as an artist I have attained that goal, lost it, and regained it often enough to know when it actually occurs."

A visual language is what makes Jon Taner's paintings distinctly his own. When viewing Jon's paintings the unique language he has developed becomes apparent. Once one takes hold of it, a catalyst for new perspectives is achieved, challenging the viewer's notion of what is real. Taner's paintings provoke an emotion, a memory, a sense of place or person. New discoveries are made with each painting.

Jon Taner's search for texture, color, and pattern leads him to a variety of books, catalogs, and magazines. It is an intuitive process that Jon employs to redefine the world he sees by using anything from an ad for an automobile to a fine reproduction of a sculpture by a Renaissance artist. They are all fodder for collages that include Jon's watercolor washes and glazes.

Jon Taner attended The Art Students League in New York City, received his BFA from The California College of Arts and Crafts, and his MFA in painting from Syracuse University. He studied with Master Printmaker Bernard Greenwald and continues to maintain his hand/eye coordination in figure drawing studios. His knowledge has been enhanced by his study of art appraisal at New York University.
