Kyla Katz

"I approach jewelry design as an art form. Each piece I create is a small sculpture intended to be worn in intimate conversation with the body. My design process is improvisational; the shape emerges from the metal as I make it. The lines, angles, and textures of the work embody unconscious elements and bring them into form."

Inspired by Modernist design of the mid-20th century, Kyla Katz brings strength and energy to her work through the use of clean lines and definitive shapes. Fundamentally minimalist in her aesthetic, she seeks to find maximum impact through the simplest forms. Her work finds beauty in the language of pure geometry.

Katz hand fabricates her jewelry using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as soldering and forming. She explores how these very traditional techniques can be used to create very modern designs. Her work is distinctly sculptural and geometric and is made from 100 percent recycled sterling silver and gold.

Katz studied metalsmithing at the historic Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago. She has also participated in classes and workshops in specialized techniques such as fusing, forming, and the application of gold to silver (keum-bo). In addition to formal training, Katz has conducted explorations of a wide variety of forming techniques in order to develop her distinctive style.
