Lanny Bergner: Sculptor
The ethereal quality of Lanny Bergner's work contrasts with the mundane materials (such as common industrial mesh) that he uses to construct them. He seeks inspiration from the biomorphic forms and cellular structures of plants, microorganisms, and undersea creatures, as well as geology and cosmology.
Bergner's tables are created out of stainless steel mesh with table legs made out of mesh-wrapped steel bar stock. Using only a linesman pliers and cutting shear, Bergner employs simple hands-on joining techniques. The imagery is created by "flame painting" the mesh with a propane torch.
Bergner received formal training as a sculptor, having received a BFA in sculpture from the University of Washington in 1981 and an MFA in sculpture from Tyler School of Art in 1983. The specific techniques he uses in the construction and surface treatment of metal mesh are self taught.
