Laura Peery

"The past is with me every day. As a child, I spent time with my grandmother in her dress shop. Today, I revisit those memories while I make my textured porcelain teapots."

Laura Peery draws inspiration from the New Orleans dress shop her grandmother once owned. For her, the best thing about "College Frocks" was watching the seamstresses entrusted with making dress alterations. Upstairs, amid a hoard of fabric scraps and threads of every color, they magically transformed the frocks so that they perfectly fit each person.

When Peery first discovered clay, she noticed its ability to mimic fabric. Her porcelain and mixed-media objects are composed as if assembling a garment of multiple textures, prints, and colors. Fabrics pressed onto the clay surface provide texture. The clay is cut and shaped to create form, and the pieces are assembled as if from a dressmaker's pattern. Color is brushed, rubbed, and sprayed, giving the surfaces a soft patina. Peery alters each piece until it is, to her eye, exactly the right shape, color, and size—a perfect fit.

Laura Peery received an MFA from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Her work has been shown across the USA as well as in Taiwan and Canada. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and the Fuller Museum of Craft in Brockton, MA.
