Matt Hutton

"I enjoy the quiet and small moments in design—the ones that are often overlooked."

Hutton's refined, elegant designs are inspired by vernacular architecture and forms found in nature. He draws upon the structure, construction, and history of these landmarks and other sources to create functional objects.

Rarely square or symmetrical, Hutton's furniture utilizes bends and curves to form subtle yet complex connections. To create these striking pieces, Hutton combines traditional hand skills such as dovetails and shaping with cutting-edge digital technologies such as CNC routing and CAD renderings.

Matt Hutton earned a BFA in woodworking and furniture design from the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Indiana, and an MFA from San Diego State University. He has also studied woodworking in England and Japan. Over the past fourteen years, Hutton has been an instrumental leader in establishing a nationally recognized furniture design program at the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine.
