To form these sculptural vessels (ranging in magnitude from the size of your hand to the size of your whole body), Michael Bauermeister saws rings of wood and laminates them to form the basic vessel shape. Then he carves into the wood, forming that organic bark-like pattern. Finally he sands and polishes each one to a finish.
Bauermeister's forms are inspired by objects he sees in nature and in cities. His technique is influenced by his reverence for ceremony and tradition in craft. But when necessary, he's also making up his own tradition to keep himself happy.
He tells us that his vessels are "very useful," and that they "hold relief from an overly rational, rectilinear world."
