Robert Poe

"My painting is an improvisational process as I establish rhythms of color and line. The composition unfolds with dominant and subordinate colors, shapes, foreground to background. The dynamics are loose, energetic, and bold."

Non-objective painter Robert Poe describes his work as "improvisational in the same way Jazz is created." He has always been experimental with compositional ideas, based on rhythmic relationships he observes in music. "I keep trying to surprise myself", he said. " Color turns into shapes, then into space, Boundaries turn into edges, then into lines. Those changes are what keeps me going."

Robert describes his process: The first three or four layers are attempts to create serendipitous relationships of shape, line, color, space. After this, he steps back and begins to discover what new relationships have been created and which need to be pushed in different directions. As the overall balance of these elements begin to develop, the composition unfolds.

A native of North Carolina, Poe wanted to be an engineer until Joe Robertson lured him into his drawing class. New York City stimulated a love of music with art while attending the Brooklyn Museum School. He completed his BA at UNC Chapel Hill, and a MA at ETSU, Johnson City, Tenn. Living and traveling in Europe; interacting with vibrant University students for 38 years stoked creative energy.
