Randall G Dana

Randy Dana Photography

"My goal as an artist and photographer is to encourage a more intimate experience of ordinary things. By presenting my subjects in unusual contexts, I create a change in perspective, an alternate view. Please take a closer look and enjoy my vision."

Randall G. Dana's work is an exploration that begins with flowers, fruit, and other organic materials. He then incorporates a variety of objects as content and backgrounds—glass, burnt copper, aged wood, stone. Dana's unexpected compositions, the soft natural lighting, and the rich colors and textures combine to give a gently surreal, painterly quality to the images.

Using his large-format view camera, Dana shoots color negative film. The lighting is natural "cloud light" falling softly through the studio window. Many of Dana's arrangements are on and under glass, so that reflections overlay the reality below. This layered effect is created in the studio, not as a digital afterthought. The 4x5 negatives are then scanned for print preparation via computer.

While a philosophy major in the 1970s, Randall G. Dana also studied drawing and design. His first camera came in the early 1990s, and photography quickly became a serious obsession. Dana studied at Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle, and by the end of the decade, he was selling his color still-life photos at galleries and art festivals nationally. Many of his techniques are self-taught and self-discovered.
