Sarah Chapman

Sarah C. Chapman

"I love the scale involved in making jewelry, and that the engagement with the work is so personal, like an ongoing dialogue that becomes part of how you move through your world."

Sarah Chapman is known for a unique design sensibility, balancing the sculptural forms of her jewelry with the softness of stones and surface textures. Chapman's work is inspired by architecture, by nature as architect, and by her own desire to build. She is struck not only by the process of building, but also by the ways decisions are made and items organized, and how a structure grows from an idea.

Chapman makes hand-fabricated metal jewelry, aesthetically merging the industrial and natural worlds with an emphasis on functionality. Each piece is carefully considered, from the initial design process, to etching patterns onto sheets of metal, to using different techniques for forming, and finally, to incorporating stones and oxidizing the final pieces of jewelry.

A studio jeweler and educator for over twenty years, Sarah Chapman's professional background is a hybrid of academic, studio art, and education studies at Northeastern Illinois University combined with an ongoing love for self-directed exploration of metalsmithing through research and workshops.
