Silk River Studio
Born and raised in England, Tracey now enjoys living in the wild landscapes of Wyoming. The flowing colors of her lyrical, hand-painted silks are a response to the patterns, moods, sounds, and color combinations that she notices throughout her day. Nature also provides a never-ending seasonal palette of inspiration. As the seasons change, so do the color harmonies in her distinctly feminine work.
Dobbins prefers to use a variety of silks because each has its own charm--from dense and draped to floaty or gauzy. The many uncontrollable variables of painting on silk force her to work spontaneously, which she loves. Armed with sumi brushes and her fingertips, Dobbins intuitively guides catch-pools of color over each taut surface, adding and taking away from above as well as from below the silk.
After spending 15 years sculpting in bronze and raku-fired clay, her life took an unexpected twist. A chance encounter with painting on silk left her mesmerized. She began exploring painting techniques by setting up experiments, then learning from the results. This methodology has enabled Dobbins to develop her signature style, a totally fresh approach to painting on silk.
