Sophie Hughes creates jewelry that is tactile and fluid and meant to move with the wearer. She draws inspiration from the malleability of raw metal as it curves beneath her hammer blows, and from the complementary curves of the human form.
Hand-fabricating each piece with the belief that the designer and maker should be the same, Hughes first forges the jewelry into shape. Much of her work bears the fine texture from the hammer and anvil and this technique of fabrication allows her pieces to be visually substantial, yet physically lightweight. This allows the artist to create large earrings that are especially comfortable, with each piece subtly unique.
Hughes earned a BFA in Metalsmithing from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2008. While in school, Hughes was honored to be an apprentice and a studio assistant to several renowned jewelers, which significantly supplemented her formal training. In her own studio since 2008, she draws from this background to create bold, yet very wearable jewelry.
