For TJ Volonis, making art is about developing techniques and craftsmanship and applying them in a detailed way to push the limitations of his chosen materials. Any particular piece of artwork is a dialogue or conversation between the materials and the artist. The spirit of the work lies in its intention and execution.
Volonis uses standard sweating or soldering techniques to create his work. He intentionally works within the parameters of convention in working with copper. The application and imagination behind each piece gives it such a fantastical aesthetic.
Volonis is a completely self-taught artist. He has always been in love with copper—its warmth, relative softness, and other interesting qualities. His work has appeared in many top design publications including Elle Decor, Wallpaper* Magazine, Luxe Interiors + Design, New York Observer, Lonny, Freshome, and Design Milk.
