Virginia Wood

"Art is visual music."

Virginia Wood is primarily an abstract painter. Her compositions evolve from within--a simple shape or line morphs into a complex composition under her hand. Like a kaleidoscope, no two works are alike and the possibilities are endless. She is a colorist using an underlying geometry and attention to values that give structure and form to her work.

Wood works in oil on canvas, pastel on paper and monotypes embellished with pastel on paper. She layers her colors which allows for textures and surprises. The pastels are spray-fixed with a special handmade fixative applied with an airbrush between each layer allowing for multi-layering similar to oil or acrylic. The appearance is rich and deep. They will not smear or flake.

Virginia Wood studied painting formally at the University of South Carolina and The Art Students League in New York, where she focused primarily on Life Drawing, as well as drawing classes at Bradley University, Peoria, IL. Many workshops and classes followed in different locales over a number of years which included papermaking and monoprinting. Making the work itself is a truly great teacher.
