About this Artist
"Glass art is what I was intended to do, and it would not be possible without those of you who appreciate it as well."
Designer, craftsman, and artist Cal Breed finds his voice in the process of making. Decisions and choices describe the artistic vision of a maker, and Cal's vision is spelled out daily while making glasswork. As a designer, he wades through the precarious process of marrying the distinct, the decisive, and the deliberate with the vague vision gifted through intuition. As a maker, he pushes forth to refine a relationship with his material, with its restrictions and his urge to go beyond its boundaries. As an artist, he remains on the endless pursuit to bridge the gap from idea to object.
Cal Breed and his wife, Christy, have owned and operated Orbix Hot Glass atop Lookout Mountain in northern Alabama since 2002. All of Breed's designs pay close attention to proportion, color, purity, and form. Each is chosen with specific intention to accentuate details particularly innate to glass. In some pieces, simple overlapping techniques are used to create optical distortions while highlighting contrasts of color. Other pieces are defined by transparent incalmo bands, employing color gradients and optical density to express breathtaking arrangements.
In 1994, Breed was moved to work with his hands, and he began to venture into the world of glass. He spent months as an apprentice to Cam Langley, one of the South's very few hot glass artists. He became entranced by the medium of glass and the process by which it is made. As he progressed in his explorations, Breed studied with a variety of glass masters from around the USA, working to develop his skills as a designer and as a craftsman.
It takes time to make great artwork. Most of the pieces we offer are created one at a time by the artist, and shipped directly to you from the artist’s studio.
