Art Glass Sculpture

Created by Susan Bloch
Glass sculpture is sand carved with silica carbide, a very fine silica abrasive. Preparation begins in the kiln giving the surface a gentle glow. Diamond-tip engraving, polishing, and color highlight other areas. Cutting into the image on rubber resist with an exacto knife readies the glass for carving. Blasting silica carbide against small open areas of resist develops depth. Free-form sculpting refines the form. Continuing with various tools, abrasives, and resists to enhance the image and surrounding area. Dimensions below include the stand. The glass itself is 12"H, 12"W, .5"D.

The custom walnut wood base is .5" H, 15"W, 5.5"D with a nickel holder that screws to tighten the glass. A small decorative screw cover is included.

Clean the glass with a cotton or microfiber lint-free cloth or dust with a soft feather duster. Dampen the cloth with rubbing alcohol to clean any spots. Dusting colored areas of glass is preferred to wet-cleaning.
