Black Galaxy Disk

Art Glass Sculpture

Created by Andrew Stenerson
Reminiscent of space illustration and graphic design of the mid-twentieth century, this rondelle epitomizes early popular space exploration imagery. This beautiful, unique piece easily resides on a side table or a pedestal.

A black layer of glass fronts a white background on this sculpture. Once blown, the piece is reheated and slumped to make the surface smooth and completely flat. Then, a pattern of concentric etched lines is inscribed into the surface, giving a spoke-like pattern. Engraving tools are then used to grind hundreds of hemispherical divots into the glass, exposing the white and clear glass underneath the black surface.

A steel frame is welded to fit the glass snugly. After welding, the metal is sanded, darkened, and coated to keep from rusting. The base is signed. Piece weighs approximately 10 lbs.
