Winter Joy

Art Glass Sculpture

(ID: A42958)
Created by Paul Messink
This piece (Winter Joy) is a companion to Winter Intimacy.

Both pieces are hand painted using enamel, on 9 layers of glass, then fused in a kiln into a solid panel over 1" thick. These images are based on the photography of John Brownlow.

Using these layers gives the work incredible depth and dimension. It is displayed in a custom metal stand, which is included with your purchase. Dimensions listed include the stand. The size of the panel alone is 10"W x 10''H.

While not essential, it is recommended to light this piece from behind in order to achieve the fullest experience when viewing this artwork.

About this Artist

Paul Messink

"I want to draw viewers deep into the picture. Elements in my work often recede into a foggy distance, creating an ethereal, almost ghostly quality. "

Glass artist Paul Messink creates multi-layered glass panels that reflect the natural world and exhibit incredible dimensionality. He is interested in natural elements such as trees, fences, and cemetery headstones which disappear into the distance, making viewers want to explore the landscape.

Messink's panels are made of 9 to 12 layers of glass which are stacked together, then fused into a solid piece up to 1.5 inches thick. Portions of each image are hand-painted onto individual layers of glass with glass enamel. The finished piece can be displayed in a gallery stand, and looks spectacular when lit from behind.

While mostly self-taught, Messink has studied glassblowing, flame working, and kiln working with artists including Annette Baron, Don Schneider, and Susan Glasgow Taylor. He has also taken workshops from Third Degree Glass Factory in St. Louis and the Chicago Glass Collective.
