Black and White Vortex Bottle

Art Glass Vessel

Created by John Gibbons
The "Vortex Bottle" is created by first rolling up black and white rods of glass over a bubble and then poking a hole in the side of the bubble and placing a new blow pipe in the hole. Turning the bubble causes the spiral to go from the bottom to the side. Then the bubble is blown out and flattened with large thick cork paddles. Once the bubble has cooled the bottom is flatted and another metal rod with a little bit of glass on the end is attached to the bottom of the bubble and the glass is broken off the blow pipe. Now the vase can be heated and the neck can be stretched out.
