Essential to Life

Art Glass Wall Sculpture

Created by Mary Johannessen
Inspired by the four elements considered to be essential to life, fire, water, earth and air; each panel is a unique multi-layered, kiln fired art glass composition. Multiple assemblies and firings are required to create each piece. A number of striped glass string designs are each fired, cut into cross sections and reassembled to create the barcode-like designs. The four elements are also individually created and fired. The panels themselves are each fired three times, first to fuse the color block designs to a clear base, secondly to fuse the 'barcode designs' to the base layer, and finally to attach the four elements to their respective panels. Each panel measures 9.25" wide and 24.5" high. As shown, spacing between the panels is 1.5". Designed to hang indoors or in a protected outdoor space (in temperatures between 45 and 95 degrees F), easy to install hanging hardware is included.
