About this Artist

Brad Smith

"I focus on good proportions, careful craftsmanship, and practicality as well as beauty in each of my pieces."

Furniture artist Brad Smith cheerfully describes his work as "rusticated, post-agricultural contemporary country." He works from his studio on a Pennsylvania farm, incorporating parts and implements from its agrarian heritage. Ax handles, pitchforks, old planks, used farm equipment, all become a part of his unusual furnishings.

Making something special out of ordinary objects is Brad's primary goal. He can take a weather-worn and battered old plank and transform it into a tabletop with warmth, durability, and lasting charm.

Brad creates his furniture one piece at time using both traditional and modern techniques. His most unusual furniture-making tool is a 100-year-old ax-handle lathe he has refurbished to perform a multitude of tasks.

Pictures do not do these justice.
The most important aspect to me was how durable and yet beautiful these stools are. The design is comfortable with "penache". One of the first things people see when ascending my stairs to my small loft, they always comment and then want to touch!! Absolutely love them!

Beautiful product!
I use these stools at my kitchen counter when I eat breakfast or lunch. They are beautiful, stable and comfortable. I added a felt slider pad to the bottoms of the legs so they would not scratch my wooden floors. [...]

Counter stool
I bought two of these counter stools to use in my remodeled kitchen. I love the workmanship, textured axe handles for legs and a shaped seat. I added a pad on the bottom of each leg so the stool wouldn't scrape the flooring when moved around. [...]
