Pristine Elliptical Bowl with Sculpted Edges

Ceramic Bowl

Created by Jean Elton
The form for this piece is fundamentally round except for the stepped protrusions that create the visually light foot. The protrusions are irregular so as to cause a controlled distortion in the firing process to a consistent elliptical shape. The top is sculptured by hand to create a flowing, almost glass-like shape which is fired once to approximately 1800 degrees F. The inside is finished with a transparent gloss glaze; the outside is unglazed. The object emerges from the final firing, which requires approximately 2100 degrees F to take the work to its final form: a lightweight (approximately 5 pounds) yet sturdy vessel that can be used as elegant serveware (food, dishwasher, microwave safe) or as purely decorative ceramic art.
