Crab Sentinel Jar

Ceramic Jar

Created by Lisa Scroggins
This lidded jar is wheel thrown in two parts from low-fire white earthenware clay. Four curled hand-built legs are added to the bottom, and a meticulously detailed hand-sculpted crab to the lid. Once dry, the piece is bisque fired to approx. 1850 degrees Fahrenheit. This piece is now a creamy white onto which the artist painted five layers of multicolored underglazes and additional patterns.

The legs area is a rich royal purple. On the lid, the artist added layers of a creamy light yellow underglaze, a black and cream checkered band, and a multi-colored band. The crab is painted in careful detail. A red is glaze on the interior of the jar and lid. A clear, gloss glaze is applied over all. The artist's signature is on the bottom. The piece is kiln fired again.
