Matthew A. Yanchuk Ceramics

"Challenging myself to create is part of the process. Learning new ways to translate and interpret the medium and ideas is an exciting adventure."

Over the years, Matthew A. Yanchuk has explored all kinds of ceramic processes and materials, from earthenware to porcelain, functional to decorative—and learned much along the way. Whether creating work through wheel throwing, hand building, or slip casting, Yanchuk is inspired by his surroundings, memories, and interests.

Yanchuk's pieces take on aspects of architecture and fabric construction, using texture as a decorative touch. The forms that he produces come from a very organic point of view, utilizing the structure to capture the light going through the work. There is an illusion that the piece may or may not be functional—it is both at the same time.

Matthew A. Yanchuk has lived and worked in Brooklyn for more than 30 years, where he finds inspiration in the creative environment surrounding him.
