Scully Square Green
Created by Catherine Satterlee
Inspired by the large square paintings of Sean Scully, the artist produced a series of square plates based on his motifs. One of these had swatches of rectangles applied with fat, rough brushstrokes. In this plate the artist makes reference to those paintings on a much smaller scale. Layers of white slip were built up over a black clay base. When the surface was covered with a transparent green glaze, the brushstrokes underneath turned from opaque to translucent. Because the surface is glazed, it is suitable for food. The underside is unglazed, and there is a hole in the foot for a wire loop for hanging.
