Scully Square III

Ceramic Platter

Created by Catherine Satterlee
Inspired by the large square paintings of Sean Scully, the artist produced a series of square plates based on his motifs. One of these had swatches of rectangles applied with fat, rough brushstrokes. In this plate the artist made reference to those paintings on a much smaller scale using colored slips or liquid clay rather than oil paint. The surface is glazed and suitable for food. The underside is unglazed, and there is a hole in the foot for a wire loop for hanging.
