Raku Tower

Ceramic Sculpture

Created by Frank Nemick
This large-scale ceramic sculpture is equally at home on a tabletop or a floor. It is composed of two separate elements with intriguing surface effects. The top and bottom elements have crackled surfaces created using naked raku techniques. These elements also have several layers of hand-polished terra sigillata on the surface. The top element also has two glazed, raku-fired clay disks in purples. There are no further surface treatments (e.g. lacquer or wax). The base is a piece of live edge walnut with rough-sawn surfaces in addition to the live edge front and back.

Each element is filled with a structural rigid foam that is not visible once assembled. Embedded within the foam is a threaded pipe that maintains the integrity of the piece and allows for assembly/disassembly. The base has a threaded flange to which the entire piece attaches. Easy assembly required; elements screw together by hand without tools. The correct placement is clearly marked.
