Chris Stiles creates these fun loving Sandpipers on the beaches of Southern California. Each Sandpiper has two resting positions which mimics their playful gestures along the shoreline. He chooses the pit firing process as a natural and organic way to express the subtle colors found within these shore birds. Each Sandpiper is slowly eased into a large fire and covered with wood, sawdust, and seaweed. As the flames and smoke mark the surface of the Sandpipers, shades of browns, blacks, and whites start to appear. When the Sandpipers are pulled out of the smoldering fire the individual personality of each bird is revealed. A card describing the firing process accompanies each bird.
